I had the opportunity to interview the author of the YA book Tone Deaf, Olivia Rivers. Read on to find out more about this amazing author!
Please tell us about yourself in brief.
Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Bhairavee! So a bit about me: I’m an author of YA fiction in a variety of genres. When I’m not writing, I’m a college student and freelance digital artist who lives in Northern California.
Talking about Tone Deaf, what was your inspiration for the plot?
I really wanted to write a story with a deaf character, because I found the concept to be very intriguing. I also wanted to write about the music world, so one day, I decided to combine the two ideas into one novel. And so “Tone Deaf” was born!
Which character did you love to write the most?
I think Ali was my favorite character to write. She’s been through hell, but she refuses to let her challenges stop her, and I had a lot of fun writing a character who was so determined and fiery.
Is there any fun fact about the book that you would like to share?
Before it was officially published, the first draft of “Tone Deaf” was posted on the website Wattpad, and it ended up getting over a million hits. I was completely shocked by the positive reaction, but I’m so grateful for all those people who read the first draft. Without their support, I probably wouldn’t have dared to publish it!
Can we expect a sequel? What projects are you currently working for?
No, I currently don’t have a sequel planned. However, I am working on a couple other YA novels at the moment. My next release will be coming out in January 2017, and I’ll be announcing more details about that project in a few weeks.
Who is your favourite author and why?
Brian Jacques is my favorite author. His “Redwall” books were the first stories I truly fell in love with, and after reading his entire series, I was determined to write my own stories someday.
What does your typical day look like?
Currently, I’m in college, so my days are filled with classes, homework, and study groups. Generally, I do my writing in the evenings, and I usually write about 1000 words a day. I also work as a freelance digital artist, so I work on design projects whenever I have the time!
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I love to read, of course! I have very eclectic tastes, although I mostly read non-fiction science books (I adore the works of Jared Diamond and Matt Kean) and fantasy novels (I’m currently devouring “The Lies of Locke Lamora.”) I also love to garden and cook, and I’m always experimenting with new recipes.
As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I originally wanted to be a veterinarian, but when I started writing in my teens, my goals quickly changed to becoming an author. Writing is truly my passion, and I’m so grateful I can make a career out of it!
Anything you would like to add for the readers?
I’m so glad for the chance to be introduced to your blog and your readers! I adore the book community, and I’m always so happy to meet new members. 🙂
